Physical Fitness
For a long time as we surveilled ourselves daily, we saw the same person in the mirror...until we didn't.
Perhaps it was a happenstance; an unaware photo taken of you after which you asked, “Is that me?” Maybe it was a previously undetected wrinkle. Or a side view that had you hoping you were looking into a funhouse mirror.
For a while now your everyday chores have inconspicuously become harder. Bending, turning, and twisting are only done on an “as needed” basis. The necessities—walking, climbing stairs, climbing in and out of seats- might have you paying more attention to the latest stairlift commercials.
What's happening? ...we know. Is it inevitable? Of course...yes. But we don’t have to cave!
Over the last 30 years, the genre of Physical Fitness Biology has brought to light the innumerable, indisputable benefits of health and well-being by engaging in a consistent, comprehensive, physically active program. In other words...move! Unless you’ve been in a deep freeze, this admonition is nothing new. Sadly, despite these facts, too many of us (Boomers), still do not engage.
The excuses...pardon, reasons are many. Here are some of the general ones I've heard after 25 years of training people.
Knowledge
“I was always active when I was younger — in school, college, etc but that was a long time ago and I'm not sure where and how to start now that I’m older."
If you’re over 50, you may not be familiar, or comfortable, with the workings of a commercial gym. If you’re thinking about joining a gym, it would be wise to inquire about purchasing private fitness lessons from a competent, experienced trainer who has worked with senior adults. Ask the club manager to refer you to that person. *See note.
There are also on-line fitness sites that illustrate easy, basic fundamental start-up exercises that can be done at home. If nothing else, it can point you in the right direction. However, be careful. There is a lot of misinformation in the cyber world that can be harmful.
Motivation
Despite all the noted benefits of exercise, ironically, it's common to question what is to be gained by starting an exercise program. Perhaps you’re thinking you’re “too far gone,” to make a difference. That couldn’t be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, the gains/time ratio is greater for senior adults than the general population. Meaning, a senior participating in a regimented, regular exercise program will see quicker, substantial gains in their fitness level than the average adult—all things being equal. I've had many clients start training at retirement age and see significant results in a short period of time and long term benefits well into their 80’s. However, attaining these physical goals takes desire and commitment. So, it starts with a resolute mind and dedication.
Our later years are designed to enjoy the fruits of our labor—extended vacations, playing with grandchildren, tending to house projects, socializing with friends and making new ones. Enjoying the full benefits of these endeavors requires us to be as healthy and functional as possible. Reasons enough to get motivated.
Time
Ok, you’re an enterprising person- not a sloth, living every moment. Your social calendar is full. Perhaps you're still a rain-maker in business enjoying the benefits of your labor; fine restaurants, fine wine, amazing vacations. You’ve worked hard and you deserve it. You have a lot to show for it, .... including your waist-line.
Whoa.. that’s harsh. Lets state the obvious. All we have is 24/7. What and how we spend that time defines our quality of life. We, of course, take care of what we deem the necessities. Thankfully, most of us have the luxury of discretionary time- time that allows us a respite from work, family requirements,, social obligations -- time that lends us an opportunity to better ourselves. And although were all guilty of wasting time, how much fun would it be anyway with your motor always going? So yeah, hang out, binge watch, take naps, burn a few hours online, (like reading this blog). But remember a universal truth: garbage in; garbage out -- literally and figuratively. Take care of your vessel. Look, it's all going south anyway. Let's try not to invite problems that rob us of that precious...time.
"We make time for the things that are important. If we don’t take time to be healthy, there will be plenty of time to get sick."
Cost
The days of Jack Lalanne appearing on grainy black and white television are long gone. However, our ubiquitous video world of today offers an endless amount of fitness instruction for all ages and abilities. All for free. That said, you get what you pay for.
As older adults, it would make sense to scrutinize any recommended prescribed fitness program presented on the internet. Although well intended and presumably knowledge-based, all things are not equal. The information is understandably general in nature —appealing to a wide audience. Therefore, it would be wise— given our diminished capacity— to invest in personal instruction with an experienced trainer to customize an appropriate fitness program geared to your ability.
Note: Be sure to research and vet the person you select. Most trainers are employed by big box gyms and require you to purchase a club membership to access their trainers. If that is cost prohibitive, look for independent trainers who have a private studio and/or can perhaps, come to you for possible home instruction if desired, although that alternative can be limiting in scope. The investment should provide a foundation for your fitness plan and expedite the time needed to see positive benefits.
